This is an hourly, 11-month position starting the week of February 18, 2019. This position will work a flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Specific schedule will be set upon hire. Hours vary seasonally. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic ocean and Cape Fear river. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit, and work.
Description of Work:
The Assistant Outreach Coordinator will promote, prepare, present, and evaluate educational outreach programs. Outreach programs are off-site, fee-based programs to schools, pre-schools, day cares, summer camps, senior care facilities, and community groups. The selected candidate will lead off-site programs as well as distance learning virtual programs. They will assist the Outreach Coordinator in evaluating existing programs and designing new programs to stimulate interest in natural resources and make education fun and engaging. As a member of the Education Team, this position will also assist with Aquarium-based programs, teacher workshops, special education events and other programs as needed, as well as represent the Aquarium at fairs and festivals and other off-site events. This position requires daily travel, the ability to work independently, and for the candidate to be extremely reliable.
• Strong public speaking and presentation skills
• Detail oriented, enthusiastic, and have a positive attitude
• Knowledge of implementing and presenting educational programs, preferably in the natural sciences
• Ability to frequently lift 25 lbs
• Comfortable handling and teaching with live animals
• Valid NC driver’s license, good driving record and background check

Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school and two years of experience in natural science museum work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
