Mermaids at Aquarium

This is no fish tale: mermaids will be swimming at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher soon. The world-famous Weeki Wachee Mermaids arrive in March for two weekends only, for their first-ever appearance in the state, March 3-5 and 10-12, 2017.

Live mermaids will enchant guests, young and old, swimming and twirling in the 235,000 gallon Cape Fear Shoals habitat with sharks, rays, schooling fish and a green sea turtle named Shelldon. The mermaids will swim multiple times daily. Visitors also will have the opportunity to meet a mermaid up close, on dry land. Additional mermaid- and pirate-themed activities include a scavenger hunt, crafts, photo ops and autographs.

“People are fascinated with mythical mermaids,” said Aquarium Director Peggy Sloan. “During their visit to the Aquarium, the mermaids will entertain guests and help us share important realities about sea creatures and protecting the ocean.”

For a deeper dive into the Aquarium mermaid experience, guests can make reservations for additional special programs (limited space available):

  • Mermaid Paint Night, 6 p.m. Thursdays, March 2 and 9
Includes Sip and Paint Carolina Beach instruction, paint supplies, take home canvas (no live mermaids)
  • Breakfast with Mermaids, 8 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, March 4,5,11 and12
Includes Wake and Bake Donuts and mermaid meet and greet
  • Mermaid AquaCamps, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturdays, March 4 and 11

  • Children’s Discovery Time, 10 a.m. Fridays, March 3 and 10

The Weeki Wachee Mermaids are part of a 70-year tradition celebrating a mythical underwater world at one of Florida’s oldest and most unique family attractions, the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park.

Daily mermaid dives and meet and greets during regular Aquarium hours are included with admission. Camps, breakfasts and Discovery Time require additional ticketing and require preregistration. Aquarium admission and reservations are available at
