The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores seeks a talented, enthusiastic interpreter to lead groups of all ages in a wide range of educational programs and activities. The Outreach Assistant will enhance and expand the important education mission of the Aquariums by taking creative education programs “on the road” to serve groups who are not able to come to the Aquarium. This includes, but is not limited to, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, daycares and preschools, summer camps, and festivals.

This position’s duties include developing, promoting, preparing, presenting, and evaluating a variety of education programs on native North Carolina species and habitats that can be presented off-site. The position also assists the Outreach Coordinator with research and the development of new programs utilizing creative interpretive aids to make education fun and engaging for a variety of audiences, as well as evaluating these programs for effectiveness.

The Outreach Assistant is responsible for proper care, husbandry, transport and security of live animals over extended periods of time and, at times, overnight. Program animals vary but may include marine invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and birds.

Position requires frequent travel, including overnight visits, weekend work, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. As a member of the Education Team, this position assists with Aquarium-based programs, teacher workshops, helps with special education events; staff the touch tank, discovery carts and floor programs. The instructor also represents the Aquarium at fairs, festivals, science fairs, and career days, as well as state and regional environmental education conferences. Weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required.

*This is an 11-month position, eligible for rehire after a mandatory 31-day break. It is an hourly position with a maximum of 32 hours per week and is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.


Excellent presentation and programming skills are required. Prior experience in educational program design and presentation preferred. Must be capable of working cooperatively with others and also working independently. Must be creative, enthusiastic with a positive attitude, and have good organization skills. This is a very physically demanding position and the qualified candidate must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and stand for long hours at a time.

Training and Experience

Required: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in Biology, Zoology, Botany, or other natural science curriculum related to the area of assignment and one year of experience in a natural science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have a good driving record and valid state license.

Preferred: Prior experience presenting live animals in an informal education setting. Prior experience with marine science programming a plus.
