The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC and is nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 1600 animals in its collection. Over 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see the largest collection of sharks in North Carolina, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and think about how special North Carolina’s waterways are.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
**Position will function as Assistant Diving Safety Officer/Guest Dive Coordinator for North Carolina on Aquarium Roanoke Island**
The position primary responsibility will be the daily management and promotion of the fee based guest dive immersion program, including direct supervisory responsibility of dive staff conducting underwater experiences. Position will also assist in supervision, training, evaluation, documentation, scheduling, and work closely with 50 staff divers including volunteers to effectively carry out dive operations within an aquarium dive setting. In absence of Dive Safety Officer, individual assumes full responsibility for safe operation of entire dive program. Position assists with documentation and maintenance of a dive equipment inventory, plus performs any repairs as directed. Position ensures all dive operations, under direct supervision, are conducted in full compliance with OSHA, AAUS, and NCA Dive Safety Manual and serves on the Aquariums’ Dive Safety Board. Weekend and holidays work hours are required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Experience with aquarium diving, including with large animals, collecting by SCUBA, and use of surface supply air.
2. Experience operating and maintaining all dive equipment and gear operating and maintaining air compressor and air-filling station.
3. Experience with supervising and managing a budget.
4. Experience with aquatic animal husbandry and aquatic life support systems.
5. Experience as a recreational dive instructor.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, Diving Industry Safety Standards, AAUS and Divers’ Alert Network.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in a natural science field, physical science, safety management, occupational safety, marine engineering or related field and one year diving experience, including scientific diving experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Diving experience may be substituted year for year up to a maximum of two years of the formal education requirement.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Necessary Special Requirement
Certification as a diving instructor from a nationally recognized organization or member of the Recreational SCUBA Training Council (PADI, SDI, SSI, YMCA etc.), NAUI etc.
