The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC and is nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 1600 animals in its collection. Over 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see the largest collection of sharks in North Carolina, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and think about how special North Carolina’s waterways are.


Reporting directly to the Building Superintendent, position is responsible for maintaining the building, exhibits and grounds of the aquarium in a clean and operating manner. Primary job responsibilities include cleaning floors, walls, offices and public areas. This includes restrooms for staff and public, food service areas, teaching labs, giftshops, auditorium, courtyards, admissions area, husbandry quarantine and holding areas, and the natural habitat area (greenhouse). This position is responsible for routine cleaning of all windows, doors, exhibits, etc., removal of trash from public and staff containers, and cleaning furniture and fixtures in office and work areas. This position also performs grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, mulching, raking, planting, pruning and watering of plants. This position is responsible for maintaining and cleaning state vehicles. This position sets up rooms, conferences for public and private meetings and events both inside and outside of the facility. This position conducts minor maintenance and repairs on the facility and grounds, including unclogging drains, replacing fixtures and bulbs, sanding and painting walls and exhibits, laying carpet and tile, and other repair needs. Weekend, evening and holiday work is required.


1. Demonstrated experience operating electrical power tools and carpentry hand tools.

2. Demonstrated experience cleaning (such as office, business or commercial cleaning).

3. Demonstrated experience with grounds maintenance.

4. Ability to read and comprehend detailed instructions and directions, maintenance and procedural manuals, codes, regulations and safety sheets.

Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience.
