The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located in Manteo, NC and is nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 63,000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 1600 animals in its collection. Over 280,000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see the largest collection of sharks in North Carolina, learn about sea turtle conservation, participate in a variety of programs, enjoy the beauty of the area, and think about how special North Carolina’s waterways are.

Reporting directly to the Operations Superintendent, position is responsible for maintaining the building, exhibits and grounds of the aquarium in a clean and operating manner. Primary job responsibilities include: Building Cleanliness – This employee will perform housekeeping duties to include the cleaning of floors, walls, windows, etc. in offices, life support areas, and public areas. This includes restrooms for the public and staff and such specialized areas as food service operations, teaching labs, gift shop, auditorium, courtyards, admissions areas, husbandry quarantine, holding and operations area, and natural habitat exhibit galleries. This includes routine cleaning of glass in aquarium, windows, doors, exhibits, etc. several times daily. Some areas must be disinfected and deodorized as necessary. This employee will also manage all recycling (cans, bottles, cardboard, paper, etc.). He/she may be responsible for accepting UPS and freight deliveries. Grounds Cleanliness and Security – This employee will perform grounds maintenance tasks to include mowing, trimming, mulching, raking, emptying and sanitizing trash and recycling bins. Other plant and grounds maintenance will include pruning, planting, fertilizing, and tree removal. Moving of lawn furniture and cleaning/repairs to outdoor exhibits will be additional responsibilities. This employee will be responsible for washing Aquarium vehicles, power washing buildings, power blowing and/or vacuuming parking areas, and maintaining clearly marked public parking spaces. Outdoor lighting systems will be cleaned and bulbs changed as needed by this employee. This position may be responsible for locking and unlocking the Aquarium for staff or contractors. This includes securing the buildings, setting alarms, locking gates, etc. This employee may serve as the primary liaison for community service workers assigned by the NC Court System. Maintenance and Additional Task – This employee will perform building maintenance, including unclogging drains and toilets, repair of toilet valves, repair and replacement of soap dispensers. Light carpentry, drywall, patching holes in walls, painting, roofing shingles, and repair door locks He/she may also assist with major maintenance and repairs, as needed. He/she will inspect areas for safety problems. Stocking in appropriate storage areas will also be necessary. This employee will be required to be familiar with material safety data sheets as required by the NC Department of Labor. He/she will maintain records of hazardous products. Inventory of supplies, equipment and materials used in housekeeping and maintenance will be a job responsibility. This employee will assist with building and exhibit repairs, and perform painting and staining tasks, strip and wax floors, mix chemicals; he/she will maintain small power tools and lawn maintenance equipment. This position sets up rooms, conferences for public and private meetings and events both inside and outside of the facility. Weekend, evening and holiday work is required.

1. Demonstrated experience operating electrical power tools and carpentry hand tools.
2. Demonstrated experience cleaning (such as office, business or commercial cleaning).
3. Demonstrated experience with grounds maintenance.
4. Ability to read and comprehend detailed instructions and directions, maintenance and procedural manuals, codes, regulations and safety sheets.

Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience.
