Job Title: Husbandry Technician/Assistant Aquarist

*This is an hourly position with a maximum of 40 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

Job duties/schedule/conditions

Primary duties for this position include assisting and coverage responsibilities for full-time husbandry staff personnel. Responsibilities will include maintenance and cleaning of exhibits, holding tanks and behind-the-scenes areas, preparation of food and feeding animals, water chemistry analysis, public speaking and interaction with visitors and record-keeping. The husbandry technician should expect to work with fishes, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and birds.

This position may require work in hot, humid, wet and outdoor conditions. Weekend and holiday work will be a large component of this position, and occasional evening work may be required. The ability to lift 50 pounds, bend over, climb, swim and perform physical labor is required. Candidate is also required to have a valid driver’s license.

Training and Experience

Required: Completion of a two-year degree in one of the natural sciences such as biology, aquaculture, fisheries management or similar area of study. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in captive fish, reptile, amphibian or bird care. Ideal candidates will have completed a minimum of a 3 month internship/volunteer position (40 hours/week) or equivalent experience in the husbandry/animal care department of an AZA-accredited institution. Applicants must be certified by a nationally recognized SCUBA agency to a minimum of open water certification.

Preferred: Completion of a four-year degree in one of the natural sciences.
