Donate That Old Rod & Reel

Kure Beach – That old fishing gear in your attic or garage may be worth more than you think. It could put a big smile on a needy youngster’s face – and could earn you a free visit to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

Rick Wilkinson (right), a surf-fishing instructor at the aquarium, spends his spare time rebuilding donated rods and reels. He then hands over the good-as-new rigs to area youth groups. Donors bringing Rick their old rods and reels get free Aquarium admission.

"Let’s Go Fishin' "
Though Rick is paid staffer at the aquarium, his “Let’s Go Fishin’” program is strictly pro bono. “I really like bringing old fishing gear back to life,” he says. “But my biggest joy is giving a kid the chance to learn how much fun it is to go fishing.”

So far Rick has repaired and donated over 260 fishing rods. The refurbished equipment goes to groups like Big Buddy, Community Boys and
Girls Center, the Brigade Boys Club, Pender County Friends of the 4H
Club, and St. Mary’s Social Ministry.

How to Donate
Anyone wanting to donate a used or restorable broken rod or reel to the
Let's Go Fishin' Kids program can drop the gear off at the Aquarium
Visitors Service Desk between between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. any day. Tackle
boxes are welcome, especially if it has lures and tackle inside.

The aquarium requests that donors do not bring in heavily rusted
equipment or reels with missing or broken parts. If a piece of equipment
cannot be restored, the aquarium reserves the right to decline the
donation.
