2014 5K Race for the Planet

2014 5K Race for the Planet

8 a.m. Sunday, June 8

CANCELLED

Posted Thursday, May 22-Thank you for your support of the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the annual 5K event scheduled for Sunday, June 8, 2014. Our goal, as always, is to provide a safe and enjoyable community race experience on a beautiful course.

Unfortunately, a situation recently came to our attention that would create significant safety concerns along the race route. The race committee explored various options to mitigate concerns, but proposed changes did not meet our high standards nor our racers’ expectations. Sadly, after extensive and careful consideration, the 2014 Race for the Planet will be cancelled.

We apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause you. All registration fees will be automatically refunded in full within 7-10 business days. In addition, those currently registered for the 2014 event will receive $5 off their registration for the 2015 5K Race for the Planet to be held April. We appreciate your continued support of the Aquarium and hope you’ll consider joining us for the spring race. If you have questions, please email ncaff.registrar@ncaquariums.com or call (910) 458-8257 x.226.

The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher brings you the sixth annual 5K Race for the Planet on Sunday, June 8, 2014. Celebrate World Oceans Day at the greenest race around.

Runners and walkers receive:

  • Organic t-shirts (guaranteed for the first 300)

  • FREE admission to the Aquarium on race day

  • Reusable shopping bags

  • Recyclable bib numbers

  •  Eco-friendly medals and prizes (click here for age groups)

The 5K Race for the Planet welcomes racers of all skill levels-first time racers, children, elite athletes and walkers.  Serious runners take advantage of the flat course for a fast pace. First-timers appreciate the easy registration, cool t-shirts and on-course encouragement. The fun, no-pressure atmosphere make it a great choice for families and walkers. The seaside portions of the course offer everyone sweeping views of the ocean and Cape Fear River.

Our goal for this race is to plant the seed for eco-conscious living and raise funds for the Aquarium’s educational programs and green initiatives.

Count on us to walk the talk, too, by reducing the race’s waste stream in as many ways as possible. A festive event atmosphere gives friends and family much to do during the race.

The 5K Race for the Planet starts and ends at the Aquarium. The flat, mostly asphalt course runs through scenic Fort Fisher with amazing views of the ocean, maritime forest and historic Fort Fisher Civil War site.

Do something good for yourself and the planet.
