Aquariology Internship Opportunities

Applicant Requirements

1) There will be three distinct internship periods during the year in the Aquariology department.
2) Applications will not be accepted after the posted closing date for the internship period.
3) Applicants must meet the minimum time requirements of the internship.
4) Applicants must be available to work at least one weekend day and any holidays which fall on their scheduled work days.
5) All internships are unpaid and any lodging or transportation needs are the responsibility of the applicant. The Aquarium may be able to assist with locations for housing but does not provide housing for interns. The only exception to the above is the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (YAIO) internship offered under the NC Department of Administration to NC resident students. 6) Applicant must be self motivated, able to work well with a group or independently, a strong communicator, able to withstand working in extreme temperatures, be on their feet for long periods of time and carry more than 50 pounds.
7) Uniforms are the responsibility of the interns and they must adhere to the Aquariums Dress Code. Uniform shirts are available for sale from the Volunteer Coordinator and Khaki shorts or pants are required along with closed-toe shoes.
8) Applicant must be willing to work with freshwater fish, saltwater fish, elasmobranchs, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and birds.
9) Applicant is required to provide a reference letter.

Intern Responsibilities

1) Cleaning exhibits and maintaining animal enclosures
2) Maintaining life support systems
3) Preparing diets and feeding animals
4) Water quality testing
5) Maintaining cleanliness of all associated work spaces
6) Animal records management
7) In-water tank cleaning using snorkel. Scuba diving is not part of an internship.
8) Collecting display animals
9) Animal handling
10) Public education

Preferred Experience

1) Knowledge of large-scale aquarium systems.
2) Previous experience volunteering in a public aquarium.
3) Knowledge of species native to SE North Carolina.
4) Experience working with and handling dangerous animals.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Summer (May-August)

1) Applications must be submitted to the NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator and be received by April 1.
2) A total of three positions will be available each summer, including YAIO positions if funded.
3) Interns will be required to work a minimum of three eight-hour days to include one weekend day and any scheduled holidays. This is a minimum, and many interns work a 40-hour work week during the summer internship. If receiving the YAIO, applicant must comply with requirements of YAIO.
4) The internship will be a minimum of 12 weeks in duration.

Fall (September-December)

1) Applications must submitted to the NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator and be received by August 1.
2) A total of two positions will be available each fall.
3) Interns will be required to work a minimum of 16 hours/week to include one weekend day and any scheduled holidays. All shifts will be a minimum of  four hours.
4) The internship will be a minimum of 12 weeks in duration.

Spring (January-April)

1) Applications must be submitted to the NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator and be received by Dec. 1.
2) A total of two positions will be available each fall.
3) Interns will be required to work a minimum of 16 hours/week to include one weekend day and any scheduled holidays. All shifts will be a minimum of four hours.
4) The internship will be a minimum of 12 weeks in duration.
