Education Internship Opportunities

Applicant Requirements

1) Applications will not be accepted after the posted closing date for the internship period.
2) Applicants must meet the minimum time requirements of the internship.
3) Applicants must be available to work at least one weekend day and one other day during the week.
4) All internships are unpaid and any lodging or transportation needs are the responsibility of the applicant. The Aquarium may be able to assist with locations for housing but does not provide housing for interns. The only exception is a paid internship offered by The Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (YAIO) under the NC Department of Administration which is available to NC resident students. 5) Applicant must be self motivated, able to work well with a group or independently, and a strong communicator.
6) Uniforms are the responsibility of the interns and they must adhere to the Aquariums Dress Code. Uniform shirts are available for sale from the Volunteer Coordinator and Khaki shorts or pants are required along with close-toed shoes.
7) Applicant must be willing to work with invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and birds.
8) Applicant is required to provide a resume along with intern application.
9) Applicant is required to provide a reference letter.

Intern Responsibilities

1) Assisting staff and volunteers with visitor education
2) Assisting as needed with special programs and events
3) Education animal handling
4) An education project to be determined by their supervisor

Preferred Experience

1) Public education and public speaking.
2) Previous experience volunteering in a public aquarium.
3) Knowledge of species native to SE North Carolina.
4) Experience working with and handling animals.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Summer (May-August)

1) Applications must be received by April 15st to NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator.
2) Interns will be required to work a minimum of 3- eight hour days to include one weekend day. This is a minimum and many interns work a 40 hour work week during the summer internship.
3) The internship will be a minimum of 8 weeks in duration.

Fall (September-December)

1) Applications must be received by August 1st to the NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator.
2) Interns will be required to work a minimum of 24 hours/week to include one weekend day. All shifts will be a minimum of 4 hours.
3) The internship will be a minimum of 8 weeks in duration.

Spring (January-April)

1) Applications must be submitted to the NC Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator and received by December 1st.
2) Interns will be required to work a minimum of 24 hours/week to include one weekend day. All shifts will be a minimum of 4 hours.
3) The internship will be a minimum of 8 weeks in duration.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES-SUMMER CAMP INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Applicant Requirements

The only exception is a paid internship offered by The Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office (YAIO) under the NC Department of Administration which is available to NC resident students. 4) Ability to lift 25 lbs. in various weather conditions
5) Ability to handle long days both indoors and outdoors

Preferred Experience

1) Public education and public speaking.
2) Previous experience volunteering in a public aquarium.
3) Knowledge of species native to SE North Carolina.
4) Experience working with and handling animals.
5) Experience with working with kids of all ages.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
