This is an hourly 12-week position; 4 days a week with 24 hours per week from mid-May to early August. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear river. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit, and work.
Description of Work:
Outreach is responsible for presenting a variety of educational programs for schools, preschools, daycares, summer camps, senior care facilities, and community groups. This position will represent the Aquarium at off-site locations in the community and may include fairs and festivals. The outreach intern will be responsible for presenting outreach programming, assisting with animal care, maintaining organization of outreach program materials, completing weekly assignments to gain knowledge of the aquarium, and will work with a mentor to develop an Aquarium project. This position will include workdays on weekends, evenings, and holidays. The position requires daily travel using a state-owned vehicle.

• Ability to work alone and as a part of the outreach education team
• Basic knowledge of NC coastal species and resources
• Ability to frequently lift up to 25 lbs. and stand for extended periods of time
• Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
Applicants must be currently enrolled in college, or a recent college graduate; majoring in education, marine biology, biology, environmental studies, parks and recreation, or a related field.
Education and Experience:
Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year experience.
