Sandy salute to the penguins
When it comes to family fun at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Sandy Feat artists think big. Really big. The famed sand sculptors molded 16 tons of beach sand into a unique depiction of penguins.
The visiting Penguin Plunge exhibit, featuring four African penguins, inspired the gritty creation at the Aquarium entrance. Sandy Feat leader Ed Moore designed the sculpture. He and his team shaped it in under four days, perfecting the finely detailed scene with such tools as tiny artist brushes and drinking straws. A Sandy Feat sculpture celebrating a summer exhibit or event has become an Aquarium tradition in the past few years.
The penguin sand sculpture will remain in place outside the Aquarium entrance several weeks, weather permitting. The Penguin Plunge exhibit is free with admission or membership, and runs through Sept. 30, 2012. The Aquarium is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.
