Summer 2013 Special Activities

Explore the shore, get the inside story or choose from a tankful of other family-friendly activities in addition to viewing the exhibits. These activities are available weekly. Advance registration is required. Register online or call 252-247-4003, ext. 257. These programs run through Labor Day, 2013.

Summer camp registration begins April 1 at 6 a.m. – registrations are accepted online only.

Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor programs cover surf fishing, catching crabs and clams, kayak or canoe excursions a beach trek and feet-wet fun in a marsh exploration. See the full schedule, below.

Indoor Tours and Activities

If you want to dodge the sun or rain, take your pick of behind-the-scenes tours, available every day. Specialized tours feature river otterssharks and feeding the fish. For the big picture, sign up for Aquarium at a Glance, or take your time with Aquarium Close Encounters. The true enthusiast or budding scientist can spend an entire afternoon as an Aquarist ApprenticeDinner with the Critters and Breakfast with the Rays are fun and educational – and you don’t have to cook. Aquarium ABCs brings the small fry ages 2-5 live animal encounters, crafts, explorations and storytelling. See the day-to-day calendar, below.

Behind the Scenes: Aquarium Close Encounters
Visit labs and animal holding areas, and help feed the animals in this through behind-the-scenes adventure that includes an overhead view of the Living Shipwreck. Ages 6 and up. $15

Monday
Behind the Scenes: The Aquarium at a Glance
12 – 12:45 p.m. Visit food preparation areas, animal holding areas and labs, and get an overhead view of the Living Shipwreck. Ages 5 and up. $8

Behind The Scenes: Otter Antics
1 – 2 p.m. Go behind the scenes with the Aquarium otter keeper and discover how much fun it is to care for river otters Pungo, Neuse and Eno. Help prepare “enrichment” items to keep the playful trio active and curious during their feedings. Ages 12 and up. $25

Sound Seafood: Catching Crabs and Clams
2 – 4 p.m.  Learn the art of harvesting crabs and clams, and the importance of conserving coastal habitats. Ages 5 and up. $20

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Visit food preparation areas, animal holding areas and labs, and help feed the fish in Living Shipwreck. Ages 5 and up. $12

Tuesday

Fishing Fanatics
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Learn to catch the big ones from the surf with hands-on instruction and practice. Equipment, bait and licensing requirements are covered. Ages 10 and up. $25

Kayaking the Roosevelt Natural Area
4 – 6 p.m. Explore tidal flats and quiet backwaters and become aware of the intricate web of life thriving in this pristine natural environment. The Aquarium provides the kayaks. Ages 12 and up. $25

 Dinner with the Critters
6 – 7:30 p.m. Enjoy pizza, learn about animal care and see what it’s like to feed the animals in the invertebrate touch pool. Ages 5 and up. $20.

Behind the Scenes: Shark Snack
2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Visit food preparation areas, animal holding areas and labs, get an overhead view of the Living Shipwreck, and watch the aquarist feed the sharks. Ages 5 and up. $20

Wednesday

Aquarium ABCs
8:30-9:30 a.m. Preschoolers love learning about aquatic species and wildlife with live animal encounters ,crafts to bring home, storytelling and outdoor explorations. Ages 2-5. $10

Thursday

Breakfast with the Rays
8 – 9: 30 a.m. Enjoy a continental breakfast and help feed these amazing animals before the Aquarium opens for the day. Ages 5 and up. $15

Picnic Paddle: Canoe the Roosevelt Natural Area
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bring a picnic and enjoy a leisurely canoe trek to explore the mysteries of the salt marsh. Ages 6 and up, paddlers 12 and up. $25

Onboard Collection Cruise (June 28- Aug. 2)
9 a.m. – 12 p.m. All aboard for a trawl and dredge excursion in coastal waters to see what comes up in the nets. Ages 6 and up. $35

Marsh Madness
10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Grab your water shoes for an exciting morning wading in the marsh and the calm waters of Bogue Sound, searching for all kinds of cool marine creatures. Ages 8 and up. $10

Aquarist Apprentice
1 – 4 p.m. Join Aquarium staff on a behind-the-scenes tour, help prepare animal meals and then participate in daily care and maintenance tasks. Learn about the animals as you assist our aquarists with their caretaking responsibilities. Ages 14 and up. $25

 Summer Camps

Summer day camps combine fun and learning with hands-on, feet-wet experiences for children and youths entering grades 2-8. Each camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The fee is $250 per camper; $225 for members.

Aquarium camps typically fill up within a few hours. Online registration begins at 6 a.m. April 1, 2013. Payment is due in full at the time the reservation is placed. Reservations are taken online only.
