These unique programs have been created specifically for middle and high school students! Aquarium outreach programs bring fun activities and live animals to your classroom. Programs meet North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) standards for science – click for details. (Program Length 1- 1.5 hours)
ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) and Ocean Exploration -
Learn how ROVs are built and operated, and see the effects of this awesome technology on ocean exploration. After learning some of the history of ocean exploration, participants see a real ROV first-hand. Along the way, they learn the importance of underwater exploration. They understand how our ocean has shaped the Earth, making it habitable, and supporting amazing aquatic animal diversity.
Invertebrates: Phylum, Genus, Species |

Your students learn how to classify our local marine invertebrates after a hands-on experience with mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Participants work in small groups to observe live whelks, crabs, sea stars and other boneless sea creatures. You even see how a sea urchin eats! Maximum of 30 students per session.
Aquarium Oceanography 101
Learn the basics of the four fundamental areas of oceanography: physics, biology, chemistry and geology. Explore the many features of the earth’s ocean and its processes, while gaining a better understanding of the interconnectedness among humans, the ocean, weather, climate and natural resources. A live ocean animal may even make an appearance!
Wonders of Water
Convince your students that water is a precious limited resource! After learning the basic properties of water, students assess water availability, identify and describe a watershed, and learn how they can prevent water pollution using our Enviroscape Coastal model. Chemical analysis from different local water sources, including aquarium tanks and your school drinking fountain, are conducted. Maximum 30 students per session.

From swamps to marshes, do your students know the importance of wetlands? Students define a wetland and brainstorm wetland values and organisms; then explore the relationships between wetland organisms and their environments. In a lab setting, students investigate wetland and non-wetland soils and waters, as well as learn what makes wetland plants unique. Live animals that inhabit wetlands make this program extraordinary. Maximum 30 students per session.
