The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located 15 miles south of Wilmington, NC .in Kure Beach, NC. A living collection of over 2,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.


This position will function at the journey level in the plumbing trade while making repairs to commercial restroom fixtures as well as the installation and maintenance of supply, waste and drainage systems. This position requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings in and by the application, effect and efficacy of plumbing systems regarding their function and relationship to life support systems and other building systems. In addition, they may be required to perform a variety of tasks in other trade areas, such as basic carpentry and or general building. Work assignments are received from a supervisor in terms of the job to be accomplished and its location. Employees work dependently in performing assigned tasks but refer unusual work problems

to a supervisor for consideration and final determination. Work may involve the supervision of employees engaged in semiskilled or unskilled work. Work is reviewed through personal inspection and is evaluated for the effective and efficient utilization of materials, equipment, and labor, and for compliance with instructions. Employees may perform other duties as required. This is skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of moderately complex facility systems. The individual must have knowledge of Building and Safety codes applicable to the plumbing trade. Must be able to estimate time and materials needed for projects as well as the ability to identify and remedy occupational hazards. This position is responsible for maintaining records, requisitioning materials and supplies as needed, and makes recommendations to the supervisor for necessary maintenance and repair of plumbing systems and other building systems. This position works closely with the Aquarium’s husbandry staff in the maintenance of the Aquarium’s numerous and varied life support systems. Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license. A skills assessment may be conducted during the interviewing process for this position. If selected for hire, prior to first day of work, a background check will be completed.

To qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSAs listed below:

Must have demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing plumbing systems and fixtures in a commercial facility or similar.

Must have demonstrated knowledge of building construction methods and general building maintenance and the safe use of power equipment and hand tools.

Must have demonstrated experience to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings and specifications, equipment manuals and pump curves.

Must have basic knowledge of electrical and electronic components as it applies to pumps, motors, and controls.

Must have demonstrated experience with various types of pumps and pump systems to include preventive maintenance and repairs.

Must have basic computer skills and Microsoft Office products.

Must have a valid NC Driver's License or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

Must have the ability to bend, stoop and move heavy objects and must be able to lift 50 lbs.

May require occasional weekend and evening work as needed. 


High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in the repair, replacement or construction of piping systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
