Volunteer Diver Program
Commitment
Volunteers are expected to commit to one year of service and a minimum of four (4) dives per month, usually accomplished through one dive per week. Additional dives can be scheduled on a space available basis.
Certification
To become a volunteer diver, you must be currently certified at least Basic/Open Water through a recognized scuba certification agency (NAUI, PADI, YMCA, etc.). Dive Team Members must be at least 18 years old. For divers 16-18 years old, a Junior Dive Team Member status is available at the discretion of the Dive Safety Officer after a review of the education and training of the diver.
Gear
Volunteers are expected to provide their own mask, swimsuit, and towel. All other gear is provided/issued by NCARI for use in the aquarium exhibits.
Exhibits
The exhibit most often dived in by volunteers is the Graveyard of the Atlantic (GYA), a 285,000-gallon tank that is 14-17 feet deep. This exhibit houses 200-250 fish in approximately 20 species plus 3 Sand Tiger and 2 Sand Bar sharks.
