Position: T-1 Divemaster/Aquarist
The North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island is seeking applications for a Divemaster/Aquarist. Position is a temporary position with no benefits starting at $13.35 per hour/$23,496.00 per year based on 11 months of full-time employment with additional pay for holiday overtime. Weekend and holiday work will be required. Position reports directly to Dive Safety Officer for approximately 16 hours and Husbandry Curator for remaining 24 hours per week respectively. Work includes exhibit/offshore diving up to 8 dives per week, supervising volunteer dive teams, filling dive cylinders, collecting animals, assist with maintaining animal life support systems, meeting animal nutritional/medical needs, monitoring water qualify, and conducting live animal education programs. Minimum requirements include Instructor and/or Divemaster designation with current liability insurance (proof required prior to employment) with nationally recognized SCUBA certification agency (NAUI, PADI, SSI, IANTD, YMCA etc. Prefer additional experience working with captive animals, ability to work under adverse conditions, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work as a team member under adverse conditions, and willingness to learn. Candidate must have a valid state driver’s license, social security number, and be a United States Citizen and/or have a valid work visa (proof of each required prior to employment).

**** Position will function as Volunteer Services Coordinator at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island in Manteo, NC ****
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Reporting to the Education Curator, this position will be responsible for managing the Aquarium’s volunteer program. Job responsibilities will include actively recruiting volunteers, defining volunteer job responsibilities, providing volunteer orientation and training, conducting staff development for volunteers, creating and updating a volunteer manual and program guides, and coordinating and scheduling volunteer activities with all other Aquarium units. This position will work very closely with the Dive Coordinator to assist and coordinate the volunteer dive program for the Aquarium. This position will also be responsible for evaluating and coaching volunteers, coordinating volunteer recognition and serving as the Aquarium’s representative to other volunteer organizations. The Coordinator will also work with the Education Department in preparing written educational materials, researching copy, designing brochures and conducting educational programs. Weekend, evening and holiday work is required of this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The Coordinator must be a good self-directed, independent worker. The position must possess strong skills in organization, supervision, program planning and development, evaluation techniques, coordination and staff development. Excellent skills in written and oral communication are required. The Coordinator must be able to work effectively with people and have good coaching skills.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from a four-year college or university; or graduation from high school and four years of work in volunteer services enabling the applicant to acquire the required knowledges, skills, and abilities.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience in managing a volunteer program in an aquarium, zoo, nature center, museum or a related facility. Possession of the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification.
