Animal Care Staff Complete HAZWOPER Workshop

Members of the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s animal care team recently attended a HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations) 24 Hour workshop at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland. Kristin Clark, Maddy VanMiddlesworth, Connie Dobbs and Leslie Vegas individually completed 16 hours of coursework before spending two days at the Zoo learning how to respond to the needs of wildlife affected by oil spills and other disasters. Upon completion of this course, staffers in attendance received a 24- hour HAZWOPER certificate valid for one year, which is a requirement of anyone responding to treat wildlife affected by a hazardous waste event. This training was provided in collaboration with many partners, including the Association of Zoo and Aquariums and the Alaska SeaLife Center
