School Outreach Programs

Grade specific programs which are linked with NC Standard Course of Study:

  • Kindergarten: I’ve Got That, Do You?: Animal Comparisons-Compare Aquarium animals to students and learn how each of us gets around, stays warm, eats, and more. Live animals. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05)
  • 1st: Getting Down to Basics: Exploring the Needs We Share-Discuss the needs we all share through a story and live specimens. Live animals. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05)
  • 2nd: Circle of Life: Life Cycles of Animals-Many animals go through different life cycles on the way from baby to adult. Select insects or amphibians. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04)
  • 3rd: The Dirt on Soils-Use scientific techniques and sampling methods to learn about soils, decomposers, and more. Live animals. (NCSCS 2.01, 2.02, 2.03, 2.04, 2.05)

Stars and More from a Watery World-Learn about the players in your night sky through stories and interactive comparisons. (NCSCS 3.02, 3.04, 3.05, 3.06)

  • 4th: Feathered Friends-Get to know your local birds through specimens and interactive activities. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05)
  • 5th: Name your Niche-Explore relationships in an aquatic ecosystem through touch tank animals. Live animals. (NCSCS 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07)

Comparing Ecosystems in the Field-Explore a maritime forest, an active dune, the beach or a marsh on the Outer Banks. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 2.02, 2.05, 2.07)

  • 6th: Depending on Decomposers-Discover the importance of decomposers outside the classroom as well as in the kitchen. Live animals. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 3.05, 4.02)

Navigating by the Stars-If you can find your way around the night sky, you can sail yourself home-learn how. (NCSCS 5.01)

  • 7th: Whatever the Weather-Understand local weather conditions by using simple instruments. (NCSCS 1.01, 1.02, 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 3.05)
