Student Volunteer Program
Student volunteers are always welcome at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island! They are typically asked to contribute a minimum of two to four hours a week with a one year commitment, though seasonal opportunities and flexible scheduling are certainly possible. During the school year, weekend opportunities and after-school shifts may be available (Jr. Divers meet on Friday afternoons). Orientation sessions and training are provided, and every effort is made to match diverse skills with Aquarium needs. Student volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Student volunteers aged 14 and 15 are required to volunteer with a parent, guardian, or adult mentor.
The Aquarium recognizes that volunteers are vital to its success, and in turn strives to make the experience as rewarding as possible. Some of the benefits of volunteering include free Aquarium admission, a shirt and pin, a monthly newsletter, use of the Aquarium library, discounts in the Gift Shop and on fee programs, continuous training opportunities, enhanced skills, making new friends, recognition and appreciation from the staff, visitors, and aquatic animals that are served.
Also of great importance, volunteer work is highly sought after by recruiters and admissions personnel for jobs, college, and the military. Recommendation letters and personal references are available from the volunteer coordinator or other staff members. Coordination with special student projects may be established with knowledgeable staff members or other volunteers.
Student volunteers are involved in many aspects of the Aquarium’s operations. The responsibilities are significant and the opportunities are endless. Click on the volunteer opportunities and see which one fits you!
