Minimum 18 hours per week, some weekend hours required.


This is an unpaid, volunteer internship. Interns are an integral part of our staff and assist with all aspects of Aquarium operations. Over the course of the 10 week internship, interns learn about running a nursery and greenhouse, the challenges of running a native plant horticulture program for natural and artificial environment. The intern will gain real experience and get theopportunity to find out how the horticulture and aquarium industry really works, and learn what it takes to be successful in that field. You will also be able to get valuable references for your resume and future job applications.


Applicants should have good organizational & communication skills, and interact positively with, co-workers, volunteers, and the general public. Candidates should be recent graduates in or are currently majoring in Plant Sciences, Horticulture, Biology, Natural Resources, Ecology, Environmental Education or a related field. A flexible schedule and a valid driver’s license are required. Candidates must produce proof of current health insurance coverage upon hire; health coverage is not available with this position. A working knowledge of Outer Banks native flora is helpful, but not required.

Job Description:

Daily routine may include, but is not limited to, watering, transplanting, weed control, pest monitoring and control, installing new plants, rotating seasonal exhibit plants, pruning, soil preparation, mulching, and propagation. Work areas will include the Aquarium’s greenhouse and nursery, the indoor exhibits and exhibit support areas, and the outdoor landscaping and demonstration gardens. Daily tasks will vary depending on weather and seasonal needs. Field work opportunities –native plant surveys, seed collection, etc. — are possible.

The intern will also work on a special project designed in cooperation with the Horticulturist. The project will focus on an area of special concern for NC Aquarium Horticulture, i.e., native plant propagation, habitat or landscape restoration, renovation of conservatory plantings, or biological pest control.

The intern must be willing to adapt his or her schedule if necessary when weather conditions do not permit outdoor work. Project research and preparation can be conducted on rainy days when possible.
