This internship is an unpaid, seasonal position and does not include state benefits. A typical work schedule is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a minimum requirement of 16 hours per week and a maximum of 40 hours per week for 12 weeks.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 5,000 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems. 

Duties

The Saltwater husbandry intern position is responsible for assisting our animal care staff in a variety of tasks revolving around the care and maintenance of the many fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds exhibited at the Aquarium.

 This position performs the following essential functions:

• Cleaning animal exhibits and holding areas

• Diet preparation and feeding

• Assisting with water quality testing

• Assisting with animal quarantine

• Maintaining exhibits and life support systems

• Assisting with training and enrichment

• Conducting record-keeping   

The Saltwater husbandry intern works outdoors, in possible adverse conditions such as high temperatures and humidity. This position will require lifting heavy items (approximately 50 pounds) and climbing ladders. 

Preferred Experience:   

• 1 year of college completed in one of the following fields of study; Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Biology, Ecology

• Must have a valid driver’s license

• Must have signed a liability waiver prior to start

• Ability to work as a member of a team
