This is an hourly 16 week position; hours may vary per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of our aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats. 

The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 2,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems. 


The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores seeks talented, enthusiastic instructors to assist with a wide range of programs and activities. The Special Activities branch of the Aquarium’s Education department offers fee-based programs and activities to school groups and the general public. This position will work with both our camps and our public programming. This includes, but is not limited to salt marsh explorations, sleepovers, paddle trips, surf fishing, and live animal presentations for groups of all ages.  Instructors typically work up to 32 hours per week during the 16 week position.  

Education and Experience: 

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of scientific terminology and classification.

Knowledge of environmental education principles and scientific techniques.

Basic communication skills and ability to communicate scientific information with the general public.
