This is an hourly, 11-month position starting February 2021. This position will work weekends, and specific schedule will be set upon hire. Hours vary seasonally. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear river. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh and beach. Description of Work:

This position will serve on the Volunteer Services Team for 50% of their work, and as a Public Educator for 50%. Educators are responsible for presenting a variety of educational programs for aquarium visitors and the general public. This position will present live animal programs, feedings, and dive shows, and engage with visitors at our on-the-floor exhibits such as bald eagle, touch pools, and sea turtle. Educators will be responsible for answering visitor inquires and assisting with animal care. As a member of the Volunteer Services Team, this position will recruit, train, and evaluate Education volunteers. This position will be responsible for scheduling volunteers to staff stations around the aquarium and be the first staff member to cover these stations when volunteers are not available. This position will include workdays on weekends, evenings, and holidays. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•    Excellent written and oral communication skills 

•    Experience presenting educational content to a variety of audiences

• Experience providing customer service to the general public. 

• Ability to work with live animals

• Ability to manage volunteers ages 14-99. 

• Strong work ethic and positive attitude

Education and Experience: 

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and 6 months of experience as related to knowledge, skills and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
