Aquarium Signature Event: Race for The Planet this April

Runners in Race for the Planet along coastlineFort Fisher, North Carolina Breathtaking and beautiful scenery on Kure Beach is the setting for Race for the Planet hosted by the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher Sunday, April 24, 8 a.m. Beginning and ending at the Aquarium at 900 Loggerhead Road in Kure Beach, the $37 fee supports the sustainability initiatives at the Aquarium that protect the natural habitats and resources that participants will experience as they travel through the course. Participants may register for the in-person or virtual events by visiting Race for the Planet.

“Our green team at the Aquarium implemented sustainable practices and launched support systems that visitors, vendors and team members can put into action every day with ease. From composting bins at our concession area and eco-friendly lighting in our conservatory to spearheading the removal of plastic bottles in our vending machines, the Aquarium is making a difference in conservation thanks to the support of our Race for the Planet participants,” said Hap Fatzinger, director, NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

In addition to the 5K, the Aquarium is hosting a 1-mile fun run. The registration for the fun run is $18. The Aquarium is excited to offer both the 5K and the fun run virtually Sunday, April 24 – Saturday, April 30. Participants are welcome to run anytime from anywhere in a show of solidarity and support for a greener planet.

The green initiatives that are funded through Race for the Planet proceeds bolster the Aquarium’s ongoing work to serve as a leader in conservation and sustainability. Through community outreach, the Aquarium shares encounters with ambassador animals that best tell the story of how sustainable practices are critical to protecting their natural habitats.
