Design A Dino - Bring Awareness to Endangered Species (2-5-18)

PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. – In an effort to combine passion for saving endangered species, coloring, and dinosaurs, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is hosting a design-a-dinosaur contest beginning Feb. 19. There are two different contest categories – student and public editions.

Participants of the “Design a Dino” are asked to color the dinosaur to look like their favorite endangered animal. Two of the many life-sized, animatronic dinosaurs visiting the Aquarium this summer will be painted with the one-of-a-kind markings created by the two winners.

“This is an exciting opportunity to not only bring dinosaurs to the Aquarium, but also to bring awareness to animals that are facing their own extinction today,” said Hap Fatzinger, director of the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. “We hope that this will give students and the public an opportunity to research endangered animals and decided which one they would like to bring awareness to.”

The student edition asks artists to color a Coelophysis, a lizard-like dinosaur that walked on two legs and roamed the earth roughly 210 million years ago. Submissions for the student edition are limited to school-aged youth; kindergarten to seniors in high school.

The public edition is open to all ages and features the Suchomimus, otherwise known as crocodile mimic who had a toothy snout that was four-feet long. Both editions require participants to write two to three sentences explaining what endangered animal they would like to help protect.

So, grab crayons, paint or other mediums, and submit your masterpiece by 11:59 p.m. April 1. Aquarium staff will select the winning color schemes to be unveiled April 18. The winners will also receive four (4) general admission tickets to the Aquarium. Coloring sheets can be downloaded from

Completed coloring sheets may be submitted to the Aquarium by email with the subject line “Design a Dino” at [email protected] or by mail to North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, 1 Roosevelt Blvd. Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512.
