Aquarium Awards Employees for excellence (3-16-18)

PINE KNOLL SHORES, N.C. – Dependable, trust-worthy, determined, kind, thoughtful – there are many words to describe employees at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. Recently two were honored for outstanding performance that went above and beyond.

Kerri Sommer, special events assistant, was named the 2017 Customer Service Award for her excellence in customer relations, enthusiasm, outstanding personal attitude, and commitment to inspiring others. Amanda Goble, a member of the Husbandry team, was awarded the 2017 Award of Excellence for her high level of professional knowledge and skill, strong work ethic and dependability, enthusiasm and outstanding attitude.

A member of the Special Events team, Sommer interacts with visitors on a daily basis. She coordinates events from start to finish. One of her co-workers called her a “magical memory maker.” From business meetings and corporate dinners to wedding rehearsals, receptions and ceremonies, Sommer helps navigate visitors through the meticulous details of event planning. Sommer is highly regarded for her energy and spirit. As one staff member describes, both her energy and spirit “make people want to be around her. You can depend on Kerri to help anyone, with anything, no matter what.”

Goble is the staff aviculturist in the Husbandry department, the team that cares for the animals. She was certified by the International Avian Trainers Certification Board last year and works with the owls, vultures, pelicans, and other birds at the Aquarium. She not only plans enrichment activities, prepares food, tends to animal care and safety, she also assists with education programs and summer camp activities and helps her fellow employees whenever they need a hand. One of her fellow co-workers said, “Amanda is dedicated to the animals, the staff, the Aquarium and our visitors who enter our doors each day.”

Each year, Aquarium employees select their nominees for the Customer Service Award and the Award of Excellence. More than 70 nominations were cast by Aquarium employees this year.

In addition to being recognized by their colleagues for their excellence, the two received gift bags with certificates from several local businesses including Lowe’s Home Improvement in Morehead City, The Flame in New Bern, Chick-Fil-A in Morehead City, Floyd’s 1921 in Morehead City, Amos Mosquito’s in Atlantic Beach and Starbucks.
