The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats. 

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic ocean and Cape Fear river. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year.  The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh and beach. Green spaces include our facilities entrance, a 20,000ft2 conservatory housing our freshwater exhibits and a nearly ¾ acre interior garden. Supporting these areas is a 720ft2 greenhouse as well as seed propagation area.  Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit, and work.

Description of Work:

This position will work under the supervision of the Aquarium Curator and will report directly to the staff Conservation Horticulturist and the Assistant Aquarium Curator.   This position will provide daily maintenance and care of native and landscape plants on the Aquarium grounds and in exhibits that are used for aesthetic, education, research, and conservation purposes.  

Primary responsibilities include:  

• Care of existing gardens (watering, weeding, mulching, pruning and plant replacement), 

• Creation of new planted areas 

• Greenhouse care, pond care

• Plant propagation, 

• IPM and standard pest control, 

• Educational interaction with the public.

• Working in potentially hot, humid, and wet conditions

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 

• Climbing ladders

• Must possess a valid driver’s license

• Weekend and some holiday work

**The ideal candidate will have experience caring for plants in a professional situation (garden center, propagation facility, research facility, etc.), will have the initiative and confidence to work with a minimum of direct supervision.  Possessing a knowledge of herbicide and pesticide use is a plus.  

Education and Experience: 

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
