The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, located 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic ocean and Cape Fear river. A living collection of over 2,700 animals in 93,000 ft2 of exhibit space attracts and engages over 440,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh and beach. Green spaces include our facilities entrance, a 20,000ft2 conservatory housing our freshwater exhibits and a nearly ¾ acre interior garden. Supporting these areas is a 720ft2 greenhouse as well as seed propagation area. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War museum. Fort Fisher Aquarium is a unique place to visit, and work.
Description of work:
This position is at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach, NC. Position is responsible for maintaining the building, exhibits and grounds in a clean, neat, and fully operational manner. Primary job responsibilities include the maintenance, repair, and renovation of the mechanical systems and physical structures. Additional responsibilities may include the cleaning of restrooms, staff and public areas, classroom, event spaces, admissions area, and parking lot areas as well as the cleaning of all windows, doors, exhibits, and removal of trash from public and staff containers. This position requires the routine use of hand and power tools as well as landscape equipment. Additional work may be assigned as needed to assist with special events such as setting up tables and chairs. Weekend, holiday, and evening work is required.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
General knowledge of the principles and techniques of a variety of moderately complex trades.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to the work.
Ability to operate the more common types of shop or wood working equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
Minimum education and experience:
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
